Distance Education simply means imparting education from a distance. The teacher and the students are physically seperated in this type of education.
Self Instructional printed material
Students are supplied with printed material which is divided into blocks. Each unit in a block is written in self-instructional style and consists of introduction, objectives, structure of unit, main contents, unit end activities, points of discussion, key words and suggested reading.
Video Audits
Whenever necessary, printed material is supplemented by Video/Audio CDs. They can be in the form of lectures, debates, discussions etc.
Assignments
Assignments are an inetgral part of distance education. Assignments serve the purpose of evaluation of the student's performance. These assignments are evaluated by local counselors, who also provide feedback on student's performance.
Academic Counselling
Counselling is an important activity in distance education and is entirely different from usual classroom teaching. Counselors answer the students' questions in counseling sesssions besides clarifying their doubts and helping them to overcome the difficulties they may face while going through the text. These counseling sessions also offer students an opportunity to interact with their peers.
Practical Training
Depending upon the subject, a required amout of practical training is imaprted to students in learning centers. In certain specialized subjects, intensive counselling is also resorted to.
Project Report
The student is also required to prepare projects which are then evaluated.
